Giro d'italia pops in to volterra
Val di Cecina will
also be the backdrop for the 98th
edition of the Giro d'Italia: On Thursday 14th
May the tour's pink caravan will pass through the streets of our
region with a huge following of spectators and reporters, brought
along as ever by the country's most important stage race. The stage
in question will depart from Montecatini Terme and end at Castiglione
della Pescaia and will be the sixth of a Giro that starts on Saturday
in San Lorenzo al Mare, in Liguria.
The cyclists will cross the
Sterza, Saline di Volterra, Pomarance, Montecerboli, Larderello,
Castelnuovo Val di Cecina and move on to Massa Marittima and Ribolla.
These are the very same routes that welcome fans choosing Tuscany
both for tourism and sport, taking advantage of the climate and the
quality of our roads, which are still very quiet, and therefore ideal
for fans of cycling. It's also a great opportunity for our guests at
the Hotel Foresteria, who will have the unique opportunity of seeing
at first hand the best competitors from the international cycling
scene: from Contador to Uran, Boonen to Gilbert, through to our very
own Aru, Cunego, Petacchi, Pozzovivo, Paolini and Ulissi (the latter
is from Donoratico and will be racing at "home").
The
organisers estimate that the riders will arrive in Saline di Volterra
after lunch, between 14:40 and 15:00 at about the halfway mark of the
almost-flat 183km-stage, which will have King of the Mountain points
awarded in Pomarance (364m).
